BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone has decided to postpone THIS
week's episode of Doctor Who (42) to 19 May at 7:15PM, marking the
first time that the new series has had the regular 13 episode run
interrupted since it began in 2005. 42 is being pushed back a week
because, due to the BBC's commitment to airing Eurovision at 8PM on
the 12th, the rest of the schedule was affected, and Doctor Who was
going to air at 6:40PM. The recent Doctor Who Dalek 2 parter that
aired prior to 7PM did well, but perhaps not as well as it would have
done at 7PM. If you hoped Doctor Who would stay at 7PM or later, it
looks like you won the argument. The tie-in episodes of Doctor Who
Confidential and Totally Doctor Who will be postponed one week to
stay in synch with the main series. British military forces with BFBS
1,2, and Navy will also have a 1 week delay.

Since the last edition, several networks have announced premiere
dates/times for the return of new episodes. In order of premiere:

1) Skai TV Greece http://www.skai.gr already slipped Series 2 of Who onto the air without much fanfare. It's on Saturdays at 3PM Eastern European Time. Up today - School Reunion. Skai is likely to repeat the episodes a couple of times after they air, if any of our Greek readers have missed some of them.

2) een Belgium http://www.een.be finally gets Series 2 of Doctor Who next Saturday at 2PM Central European Time. Alas, The Christmas Invasion is being skipped, so you go straight from today's repeat of The Parting of the Ways to New Earth next week, with the whole regeneration issue largely forgotten. een's start time for Doctor Who varies from 1PM to 4PM, with the occasional week off.

3) CBC Canada http://www.cbc.ca/television is giving Doctor Who the
Monday 8PM (8:30PM Newfoundland) slot starting 18 June, airing in a 2
hour block with Hustle. The CBC kindly informed the Doctor Who
Information Network http://www.dwin.org , though the CBC seems in no
hurry to update their own website. The CBC did not say which episode
would air first, though the description given DWIN implies they will
go straight to Smith And Jones, skipping The Runaway Bride for now.
The Runaway Bride would also need an extended timeslot to air uncut,
which does not square with Hustle starting on the 18th of June.
Hopefully the CBC website will update soon so questions can be
answered.

4) ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv goes to Series 3 in late June. The ABC notified the South Australian Doctor Who Fan Club http://www.sfsa.org.au that The Runaway Bride will air on Thursday 28 June at 8:30PM, with Smith and Jones and the rest of the series airing Saturdays at 7:30PM starting 30 June.

BBC America http://www.bbcamerica.com will do a 10 hour Series 1 marathon on Memorial Day (May 28), as BBC America likes to do marathons on holidays and they have Who Series 2 and Torchwood Series 1 coming soon. 9AM Eastern/6AM Pacific start time. All of Series 1 except episodes 3,4,+5. One thing you'll see in this marathon that you won't see on PBS stations - The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Bad Wolf/The Parting Of The Ways will air as 2 hour TV movies. In the case of Empty Child/Doctor Dances, the BBC America movie edit consisted of removing closing credits, removing a recap, removing opening credits, and accidentally removing part of the cliffhanger resolution, while leaving in the writer and director credits for The Doctor Dances.

Doctor Who is listed in the American Public TV May Newsletter as one of their more successful shows for gaining audiences. It aired 18 times in primetime on primary PBS stations in March, averaging a 0.9 rating, tied for 7th place with Rosemary & Thyme and Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria. WCET recently noted on their blog that Doctor Who was averaging 1.2 on their station, the best in the US to date.

And now, a repeat of a rant.

The BBC has issued new guidelines to the people who make comedies and
dramas for BBC One, Two, Three, and Four regarding opening and
closing credits of shows effective 4 June 2007. The new guidelines

discussion of how this works is at the Restoration Team forum
(requires you to accept a cookie from their system) at

Closing credits now need to be under 30 seconds long (Doctor Who is
approximately 50 seconds long).
Credits have to be perfectly centred for ease of shrinking them into
a corner of a screen to put promos up for other programmes.
Credits cannot have any vital information for the show (ie: the
Blackadder funny bits, Monty Python moving the credits all over the
place, Doctor Who doing the silent credits for Earthshock).

Those of us in the US have suffered with the practice of shrinking
credits to add extra promos for many years. Credits become too fast
or too small to read if you cared about them, you lose the closing
music (on a marginal show this can be the best bit), and the promo
for the upcoming show is too small to properly make out what's going
on, so you're disappointed if you try to focus on that. Plus, the
promo will invariably air again soon afterwards in a full screen
outside of those closing credits. I fail to see how this will create
a better viewing experience for BBC TV watchers than the current
situation of full credits with the odd annoying announcer talking on
top of the sound. Instead of just annoying the 80% of people who
don't care for closing credits and would be happy enough if you
eliminated them, you're annoying 100% of viewers, and I don't see how
it gets more people to stick around.

you think that the BBC is making a mistake, there is a petition up at

feelings. As Doctor Who is a BBC show, we should note that other
petitions and petition sites are also available, including presumably
petitions to express support for the change. I haven't had time to
look myself.
