UKTV Gold http://www.ukgold.tv put up their preliminary October 2005 schedule last week, including the weeklong premiere of the new Doctor Who series on the channel. UKTV Gold recently commented on the status of the older Doctor Who episodes on their station:
At the end of the current run of the older Doctor Who series (at the end of this year) our licence to broadcast them expires. At this point in time the decision as to whether or not we are going to re- licence them has not been taken so I would advise you contact us towards the end of the year when we may have a better idea of the future of this series on UKTV Gold.
The BBC plans to put their UK channels on the internet for UK viewers, hopefully next year. BBC One and Two are the initial channels planned. MyBBCPlayer is supposed to allow you to watch the channels online and download programmes for up to 7 days after broadcast. The BBC's report lists Doctor Who as one of several shows that is trying to take advantage of new technology. A link to the story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4187036.stm
Also, congratulations to Doctor Who broadcasters BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone and BBC Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree . BBC One is the 2005 UK Terrestrial TV Channel of the year, thanks to new shows including Doctor Who. BBC Three is the 2005 UK Non-Terrestrial TV Channel of the year.
Since 2001, every time BBC Worldwide Americas has released an early Tom Baker story on DVD, the Howard DaSilva introductions from the 1978 US syndication package were included as an extra. The first 23 Tom Baker stories had these bits of narration to help explain the stories to viewers. TJ Lubinsky, part of the original team prepping these DaSilva segments for DVD, did two interviews with TWIDW helping to explain these bits of Doctor Who history. As a cost savings and to help the DVDs in all regions be the same, the DaSilva intros will not be part of relevant future DVDs, including "Horror Of Fang Rock", coming out in the US & Canada on Tuesday September 5. Fans of the segments must content themselves with the 4 titles on which they were included (The Robots of Death, The Ark In Space, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, Pyramids of Mars). As a fond goodbye to this feature, here are links to those interviews: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/110 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/111

Gone with the November Region 1 releases are the "Who's Who" feature, which gave biographies on actors in the stories, exposing American fans to the prestigious histories of many British actors unknown here. The UK Region 2 DVDs recently discontinued subtitles for the hearing impaired on the commentary track. In spite of these 3 changes (all bad in my view), the Doctor Who DVD line in any region remains a very high quality product thanks to the Restoration Team http://www.restoration-team.co.uk who work hard on virtually every release. Here's hoping these restored versions get exposure on TV in the future instead of badly worn prints.
CBC Canada http://www.cbc.ca/television remains in strike mode, which ironically helps the Doctor Who broadcast as the credits air without being crushed. Bad Wolf, part 1 of the 2 part season finale, repeats this Sunday at 7PM. Who knows if the episodes will repeat again this year after the current run ends? (If you know, I'd love to hear from you.) No DVD release of the 2005 series is coming to North America anytime soon. Catch the episodes while you can.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
