For the new readers, this column is dedicated to covering all the known broadcasts of Doctor Who worldwide each week. Welcome aboard. |
|
On Thursday night I spotted news that threw me for a shock. BBC1 had actually greenlighted a Doctor Who TV series. BBC-1 controller Lorraine Heggessey had been serious when she expressed a desire months ago to bring Doctor Who back. Julie Gardner and Mal Young will produce the show. Russell Davies is assigned to write it. The number of episodes hasn't been revealed yet. And it'll premiere in 2005 most likely. Doctor Who is back (soon). And it's probably about 2 years from being time. Like most fans, I'm delighted at the news. I wish the people making the series the best, hope the new show is great, and am even now trying to think of ways to see the show quickly if the BBC doesn't arrange for it to air worldwide simultaneously. This had to be in the works for a long time. American Who http://www.americanwho.net interviewed me for a special show about the news. To paraphrase what I told Joey Reynolds, "on Thursday Doctor Who was considered a dead show focused on by sad fanboys. On Friday Doctor Who was a venerable institution which was getting a revival." Doctor Who might well become cool again. It is too early to know what this will mean for broadcasts of the reruns of the existing series. My hope and theory is that they should continue and become more prominent. What better trailer can a new series have than the original series. Whatever happens, we'll all be along for the ride. |
|
Outpost Gallifrey http://www.gallifreyone.com and BBCi http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho have been keeping busy with news on the series. This Week In Doctor Who will continue publishing on Wednesday, doing special reports when/if situations warrant it. |
|
The new series may be coming in 2005, but we still get the BBC declared official Ninth Doctor this fall. The Scream Of The Shalka, a full animated serial with Richard E. Grant as the Doctor, premieres on BBCi http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho in November. |

The Doctor Who DVDs rarely get discussed here, but The Dalek Invasion of Earth and The Talons of Weng-Chiang get their US/Canadian releases this coming Tuesday October 7. The Talons release is notable for having a Region 1 only extra - the Howard DaSilva introductions for all 6 episodes. Who is Howard DaSilva, you may ask. Take a look at these TWIDW articles from the past, collaborated with TJ Lubinsky when The Robots of Death and The Ark In Space came out on DVD in Region 1. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/110 - the story of Howard DaSilva & info on The Robots of Death (originally prepared in August 2001) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/111 - details on The Ark In Space (originally prepared in April 2002) American Who http://www.americanwho.net is planning to interview Mark Woda about Howard DaSilva and the ongoing restoration of the introductions for relevant DVD releases. That episode should go online early next week. |

Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org is still accepting pledges for Doctor Who as a followup to the BBV night last weekend. People interested in making a late pledge and attending IPTV's event with Colin Baker on Friday December 5 from 8 to 11PM can go to http://www.iptv.org/scifi for details. |

An update on the new UKTV channel in New Zealand. As discovered last week by the folks at the NZDWFC http://nzdwfc.tetrap.com/ last week, UKTV New Zealand will launch in November, and one of the shows it has the rights to is Doctor Who. It is not known when or if Doctor Who may come to UKTV, but it will definitely not be in November. The official word from UKTV, without comment from me - "Since the BBC won't have anything official for the BBC anniversary available for transmission until December, [UKTV] is not keen on doing anything in November" |

Another plea about WSKG 46 Binghamton, NY http://www.wskg.com . Does anyone know what the status of Doctor Who is there? It certainly appears right now that WSKG has dropped the series. |
