Happy New Year! 2003 is upon us. Doctor Who turns 40 this year. This Week In Doctor Who remains here to cover Doctor Who broadcasts around the world every week. Here's hoping for a banner year for the series. |

UK - BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ will soon air a 3rd Doctor radio drama from the 1990s - The Paradise Of Death. It will air the week of 13 January in the sci-fi timeslots of 6PM and Midnight GMT. Radio 7 airs science fiction programming 7 days a week at 6PM and Midnight GMT (30 minutes weekdays, 60 minutes weekends). UK listeners can hear the station on digital radio or TV, while fans worldwide can tune in with RealPlayer or Windows Media Player. Radio 7 also airs Dead Ringers (which sometimes has Doctor Who themed sketches) and The Navy Lark, starring Jon Pertwee. It probably has other material that Doctor Who fans would like - check its schedule. |

UK - If you have the UK Sci-Fi Channel, and haven't watched the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie on it yet, your last chance for a while will be 13 January at 8PM. It is not scheduled to air in February. |

SOUTH AMERICA - Uniseries http://www.uniseries.com.ar/ has removed Doctor Who from its schedule for the month of January. If anyone in South America is seeing Doctor Who on another channel, let me know. |

USA - Non-commercial TV stations are required to get their digital signals on the air by May 2003 or have some explaining to do to the FCC. All of the current US Doctor Who affiliates are non-commercial stations. If you live in an area with a Doctor Who station, and have a digital TV, let us know when the Who station starts airing its programming in digital. How does the show look in digital compared to analog. Especially let us know if they try to stretch or crop the image to fill a 16:9 screen. Personally, I've developed a love of the Original Aspect Ratio (OAR). 4:3 programming should be 4:3 (with bars on the sides on a widescreen TV). 16:9 programming should be 16:9 (with bars on the top and bottom on a traditional 4:3 TV). All Doctor Who stories except the 2 1960s Peter Cushing stories (and I think the 1999 Who Night material) were made in the traditional 4:3 ratio. Much as widescreen movies often have the sides cut off to fill a traditional TV, I fear that stations will make a habit of cutting off the top and bottom of 4:3 shows to fill a 16:9 TV in the future. |
While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP. |
