Various cable companies in the US and Canada paid excite@home confiscatory amounts of money to continue ISP operations until the cable companies can transfer most of their 4.2 million broadband subscribers to other systems (AT&T was cut off, so their subscribers had disruption), so I still have access and can write this column. Frankly, those cable companies were robbed, and the thing smells of a con job. But just imagine the implications. Imagine if public TV stations could threaten to go out of existence unless people sent in money? (Ok - not best example. ;->) Suppose during the 4th Doctor's era, producer Graham Williams had threatened to shutter production unless the BBC paid an extra $20 million to finish a season. Imagine the level of special effects and the expensive guest stars the show could have had. Or more likely imagine the show being shut down right then, as I doubt the BBC is as willing to part with their money as cable companies are. But it's fun to speculate. |

NEW ZEALAND - Prime TV has apparently decided to put Doctor Who back on their weeknight schedule early in 2002. It will air nightly at 6:30PM, beginning with The Leisure Hive (picking up where they left off in June). The start date was going to be 7 January, but there has been a brief delay. Keep an eye on the New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club http://www.tetrap.com/drwho/nzdwfc/ for details. |

USA - Maryland Public TV aired the black & white version of The Dæmons last week, so that version is obviously still available to PBS stations. They had aired the color versions of Doctor Who And The Silurians and Terror of the Autons. MPT is airing stories in movie format, so the next question is: will they finally air complete versions of Planet of the Daleks and Invasion of the Dinosaurs this time, or will they once again repeat the edited movie versions, which in Planet's case omits a fair amount of color footage to hide the existance of the black & white episode. On their current airing schedule, Planet of the Daleks will air late Saturday February 2, and Invasion of the Dinosaurs will air late Saturday February 23. |
