In Doctor Who on Saturday July 16 at 7.30pm on ABC TV, Rose (Billie Piper) and the Doctor's (Christopher Eccleston) pursuit of a mysterious spacecraft draws the Tardis to the London Blitz of 1941 where the bombsites are being haunted by The Empty Child; a small unearthly child with a gas mask face who is searching for his Mummy.
When the Doctor and Rose are separated, Rose, after a crazy barrage-balloon flight across war-ravaged London, meets Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), a handsome, swaggering Time Agent posing as a British fighter pilot who is searching for something which is a closely guarded secret.
While Rose enjoys her encounter with the dashing intergalactic conman, the Doctor is fascinated by the heroic Nancy (Florence Hoath) who stoically feeds the starving children living in the bombed remains of their former homes and observes the terror brought about by the appearance of an unearthly child who calls for his Mummy. Then Florence directs the Doctor to a hospital where Dr. Constantine (Richard Wilson) reveals an entire ward of patients who have turned into Gas Mask Creatures, zombie-like people whose faces have morphed into gas masks. Can the Doctor, with Rose and her handsome new friend solve the mystery of The Empty Child? And has Rose found a hero better than the Doctor himself?
