As Martha (Freema Agyeman) is about to 'phone her mother Francine (Adjoa Andoh) from the Tardis it materialises on a very hot spaceship and the Doctor (David Tennant) notes that the engines are not running. The ship's captain Kath McDonnell (Michelle Collins) tells him that the engines have been sabotaged leaving her craft on a crash course with a sun. Impact is expected in 42 minutes’ time.

The Tardis is now unreachable as the ship is venting excess heat through the room in which it materialised. The Doctor organises Martha and crewman Riley Vashtee (William Ash) to open a series of password-protected doors in order to access the control room where the auxiliary engines can be activated. Then there is a call from medical officer Abi (Vinette Robinson) to say that McDonnell's husband Korwin (Matthew Chambers) is having a seizure. The Doctor sedates him and instructs Abi to test Korwin to find out what is wrong with him.

As Korbin opens his eyes, a blinding light comes out and he says "Burn with Me" before vaporising Abi. The mysterious force which overtook Korbin now goes on a killing spree as one by one crew members are vaporised. As the spaceship hurtles towards the boiling sun, has the Doctor run out of time?
