Report from the This Week in Doctor Who Archive:
Friday 9th April 1999:
UK Gold
Late Friday from 12:40 to 2:15AM The War Machines movie version
Sunday from 8:55 to 10:50AM The Masque of Mandragora movie version
This weekend UK Gold offers two good Doctor Who stories that have nearly nothing in common. Friday night insomniacs can see the final surviving William Hartnell story. The Doctor gets Dodo back to 1966 London, just in time to witness the completion of WOTAN, the ultimate computer. In a transparent attempt to link the Peter Cushing movies into the regular series, WOTAN wants to consult with Dr. Who. Only the Doctor's available, so he'll have to make do. This story introduced Ben Jackson (the recently deceased Michael Craze) and Polly (Anneke Wills). The last time UK Gold aired this story, they used the restored prints from the video release. Sunday morning sees the introduction of the famous wooden TARDIS console. The 4th Doctor and Sarah inadvertently bring a cruel fireball to the 15th Century, where it plots to take over the planet. Oops.
UK Gold CLASSICS
Sunday from 6 to 7:55PM The Masque of Mandragora movie version
Encore of the Sunday morning UK Gold broadcast. Very handy for Church goers with Sky Digital.
