Section B - The US Public TV stations:

WXXI 21 http://www.wxxi.org has updated their schedules to reveal that they will finish their first run of Series 2 before starting a 2nd run. The Satan Pit airs this weekend, not New Earth.

Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org told a listener by e-mail that their rights to Doctor Who have currently expired. Presumably this refers to Classic Who, which MPT aired for an amazing 25 consecutive years without a hiatus (reportedly back to 1983). The package for Series 1 of New Who allows a station to air it 4 times, and MPT has aired it twice. No word on when or if MPT will buy Series 2. For now, a 25 year legacy has come to an end. For the first time since I started watching Doctor Who in 1985, no PBS station in my area is airing the show over the air. One of the original purposes of this column was to detail all the PBS broadcasts, no matter how unusual the day or time. The final decision to start This Week In Doctor Who began while watching a snowy MPT in July 1998 as they aired An Unearthly Child episode 1. There are a lot of memories of MPT (and WETA in the 1980s) airing Doctor Who. Thanks for the 25 years, MPT, and here's hoping you will find a way to put Doctor Who back on the air SOON. For WETA 26, WHUT 32, and WVPT 51/WVPY 42 (you're on DirecTV and Dish Network throughout the DC area - I'm going to include you) - now is your chance to fill the sci-fi void and air Doctor Who again.

Series 1 is currently available to public TV stations in a package
until February 28, 2009. Series 2 is currently available to public TV
stations in a package until March 31, 2010. At this time, stations do
not have access to Series 3 and 4.

4(!) Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989). Iowa Public TV is currently airing both Series 2 and Peter Davison episodes. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA and WCET 48 Cincinnati, OH are airing Tom Baker episodes while resting Series 1. WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA is airing Tom Baker episodes but apparently does not have New Who Series rights. Maryland Public TV is reporting that their rights to Doctor Who have expired.

Four stations have used all their rights to the Series 1 package - WLVT 39 Allentown, PA, WILL 12 Urbana, IL, Iowa Public TV, and Idaho Public TV. If they air Series 1 again, then they re-bought the package. OETA Oklahoma has used half of their 4th and final cycle of Series 1. WMFE 24 Orlando, FL did not renew Doctor Who. Maryland Public TV is claiming that their rights have expired, though they can still air Series 1 two more times before February 28, and they are not ruling out buying future episodes. If any other stations have non- renewed, they have yet to tell us.

Remember, for the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required to do so. WMFE 24 Orlando, FL is not expected to use their 4th run of Series 1. Other stations may make the same choice for Series 1 as February 28, 2009 comes close. Unless a station admits what they are doing, I'm stuck keeping it here with the most hopeful scenario (the number of times they still *could* air the episodes).

Maryland Public TV has told viewers that their rights to Doctor Who have expired. This would presumably be the rights to classic Who, as MPT has the right to air Series 1 another 2 times before February 28, 2009. Doctor Who is off the schedule for the first time in at least 23 years! They indicated that they might be able to get new episodes later. It is unknown if they have purchased Series 2 of new Who, which is available.
