THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - French Premiere Week! November 2, 2005 - Vol 8, No 44 The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide. by Benjamin F. Elliott http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood |

Wednesday 2 November: NRK 2 Norway - 8:05PM - Den Siste Dalek Saturday 5 November: France 4 - 10:25PM - Rose / La Fin Du Monde (series premiere) Friday 11 November: Jimmy (Italy) - 9PM - Rose (series premiere) |
France 4 http://www.france4.tv premieres Doctor Who (dubbed in French) this Saturday night at 10:25PM CET. It's a free digital channel that is part of the TNT package. Evidently the channel is not as widely distributed as more established French stations, so viewers would be advised to find out if they have the channel (or a friend has a channel) prior to broadcast time. 2 episodes on Saturday nights - episode 1 repeats Monday at 3PM, episode 2 repeats Tuesday at 3PM. |
Contrary to previous reports, BBC Prime http://www.bbcprime.com will simulcast the Children In Need http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey telethon in its entirety on Friday 18 November. This means that the 15 minute Doctor Who "scene" advertised for this special will be available to everyone in Europe, Africa, and Asia with the BBC Prime channel. Children In Need is not expected to air on BBC America, BBC Canada, or BBC Japan. BBC One - 7PM GMT BBC Prime - 8PM CET / 9PM CAT (adjust for local time) |
BBC Radio 2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 , home of the "Project: Who" documentary that tied in with Series One in March, is preparing another Doctor Who feature. "Doctor Who: Regeneration" will air at 8:33PM GMT on Tuesday 20 December. It explores how Doctor Who became the most talked about UK TV show of 2005 and the issues involved in having to regenerate the character so soon. David Tennant, Billie Piper, Noel Clarke, Camille Coduri, Russell T. Davies, and more are being interviewed. The special is timed to be broadcast just a few days before The Christmas Invasion airs on BBC One. Expected length - 1 hour. |
The Italian premiere of Doctor Who on Jimmy http://www.jimmy140.it is just 9 days away (11 November at 9PM CET). The website is not currently showing repeat times yet, though the episode is likely to repeat several times in a week. |
BFBS TV, intended for British military forces, put Doctor Who back on their schedule a few weeks back. If you have access to BFBS channels or have friends who watch them, Doctor Who is currently airing on BFBS 2 Saturdays at 5PM Central European Time and BFBS Navy late Sundays at 5AM Central European Time. |
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv edited part 1 of the 4 part version of The Five Doctors which aired on 2 November, removing the Dalek sequence. The Dalek remained listed in the closing credits. This is the first edit made specifically for these broadcasts. It has presumably been made due to the uproar in early 2004 when ABC was unable to air The War Games because of a 10 second Dalek clip in episode 10. ABC was unwilling to edit then, so they could not air the story. This time they edited - so the Dalek contract remains unresolved in Australia. You should expect the remaining Dalek stories (Ressurection, Revelation, Remembrance) to be skipped as ABC's run through the series continues. |
It's been well over 2 years. There's new Doctor Who now, with a Dalek deal in place that's making everyone lots of money. It is ludicrous that the contract with the Daleks in the old series remains unresolved. None of us in the general public know at this point who is holding this up and devaluing the old series repeats, but whoever it is - get over it and solve this mess. |
A reader of this column spotted that UKTV Gold is skipping the Colin Baker stories completely this time through the series, going from The Caves of Androzani on 20 November to Time and the Rani on 26 November. It is believed that UKTV Gold's contract to air classic Doctor Who ends next month, in which case the Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy stories now airing will be the last on the channel. Whatever happens, it is likely to air the new series repeats for some time. |
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case. |
