Bloody Daleks! The ongoing rights issues keeping most Dalek stories off of TV stations may be about to keep The War Games from airing in Australia. Basically, stations are not to air any Dalek stories after the Hartnell era due to the TV contract being up and no new agreement for TV broadcast of Dalek stories being agreed on yet. The problem is that a Dalek has a cameo in episode 10 of The War Games. Yes, The War Games has aired (even in Australia on UKTV in a best-of run) since the rights issues began. But at this point to air episode 10 of The War Games the ABC network must choose to delete the Dalek scene. I do not know when the discovery of this problem happened, but on February 6 Sue Cowley at the BBC confirmed on the Doctor Who Restoration Team forum that ABC has made the decision not to air The War Games. The theory being that fans would be more upset at a story being run with a deliberate cut of material than being skipped. At this time, should UKTV choose to run The War Games again they would also have to excise the Dalek scene. |
As a follow-up, Matthew Glavin of ABC Audience and Consumer Affairs responded to e-mails about The War Games on February 10th with a note confirming that The War Games will be screened. It is assumed that BBC Worldwide has a better idea of what they can and can't sell at a given point in time than people at the stations that buy from them - does anyone else remember when UKTV was certain they were going to air Shada? |

Doctor Who fans watching Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org last weekend (February 7/8) got to see a most unorthodox version of The Ark. With about 20 minutes left in the story, at the point where people first land on Refusis, the scene suddenly switched - to that point in The Gunfighters. Maryland Public TV claims that they aired what BBC Worldwide Americas sent them - the mistake was at that end. Their plan is to air The Gunfighters this weekend, with no repeat of the missing section of The Ark. |
UK Gold http://www.ukgold.tv will not air Doctor Who on Sunday 15 February and Saturday 21 February due to special programming. Doctor Who returns on Sunday 22 February, as UK Gold cycles back to the start of the Tom Baker era. Looks like Jon Pertwee gets skipped this time. |
The South African Sci-Fi Channel is airing SF: UK - Trips Through Time And Space late Monday 16 February at 12:45AM and Monday 8 March at 11:05AM. Matthew De Abaitua takes a look at 60s Doctor Who, the age of psychedelic sci-fi. |
