In the fall of 1964, Doctor Who began its second season by actually getting Ian and Barbara back to Earth in the mid-20th Century. Unfortunately, they've shrunk to the size of insects, which could make resuming their careers difficult. Note - this is the first story I can recall with a cat in it.
