Robert Holmes, possibly the most popular writer of the series, began his Who career with this story about crystalline aliens that enslave a primitive people, hoping to train some of the primitives for a dark purpose.

The Ice Warriors, who'll you remember from an earlier story that the BBC junked, and therefore can't be shown, take over the Moonbase, bringing commerce on Earth to a halt and threatening the planet with famine.
