BBC One's Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary on Saturday 23rd November, and all this week BBC Radio Norfolk will be joining in with the celebrations. We'll be telling Norfolk's Doctor Who stories, from people who live in the county who worked on or appeared in the show, or local fans with special stories to share. On Monday 18th, Chris Goreham at Breakfast begins the celebrations with the first of the Doctor Who features the show will run across the week. The series begins with Brian Hodgson, who now lives on the Norfolk Broads, remembering his days at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in London, and how his colleague Delia Derbyshire first produced Ron Grainer's famous Doctor Who theme tune back in 1963. On Tuesday 19th, the breakfast show hears from Karen Davies, a Doctor Who fan from Norwich who won the BBC's Doctor Who Mastermind in 2005. On Wednesday 20th, it's the turn of Dr Keith Johnston, a film and television lecturer at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, another fan of the show who explains how he uses the series in his lectures. Thursday 21st sees former child actress Barbara Harper, from Bedingham, remember her first professional acting job at the age of 13, appearing in Doctor Who alongside the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton. Chris Goreham at Breakfast rounds off its week of features on Friday 22nd, hearing from local fan Mike Thomas, who recalls his mother taking him to the Doctor Who rehearsal rooms in the 1960s. The rest of Friday sees our other programmes joining in with the celebrations. The Nick Conrad show will hear from Brian Hodgson again, as he remembers how he was given the task of creating the voices for the show's first alien creature, the Daleks! On the same show, Ken Caswell recalls his father's part in preparing the very first TARDIS police box prop for Doctor Who. On Friday afternoon, Stephen Bumfrey hears from actor Graham Cole, who lives at Wroxham. Graham, best known for his many years as PC Tony Stamp in ITV's The Bill, recalls his days as a Cyberman in the 1980s. Also on Stephen's show will be Spencer Chapman, a former BBC designer who had to oversee The Dalek Invasion of Earth in 1964. Matthew Gudgin rounds-off Friday with stories from scritpwriter David Fisher of working with Douglas Adams on Doctor Who in the late 1970s, and from husband and wife John and Hodgson, who look back at their chance encounters with Tom Baker when he was in his Doctor Who pomp. On the day of the anniversary itself, Saturday 23rd November, David Whiteley brings you two final local Doctor Who stories in his breakfast show. Actor Terry Molloy looks back at his appearances as Davros, the creator of the Daleks, and Brian Hodgson returns for a final feature to explain how he created a part of the show still used in every episode - the sound of the TARDIS as it takes off and lands! Finally, on Sunday 24th, at 12 midday you can hear all of these stories collected together in a special compilation programme, Norfolk's Doctor Who Stories, presented by Paul Hayes. |
