Closing arguments in the trial get heated when surprise witnesses from the Doctor's past and future arrive, and incriminating evidence against the Valeyard arrives. Part 13 was the final episode written by popular writer Robert Holmes, who died before getting to part 14. Script editor Eric Saward wrote a part 14, but wound up leaving the production team in an acrimonious departure. Part 14 was eventually written by Pip and Jane Baker at the last minute. Part 14 is also the longest regular episode of the TV series intended for the 25 minute format, clocking in at 29 minutes.
