KLCS was launched on 5th November 1973 by the Los Angeles Unified School District in California. In 2014 it took on a channel-sharing arrangement with former PBS station KCET.

In 2007 the channel joined several PBS stations in taking up the first series with Christopher Eccleston; it then repeated the series twice in 2008 but did not take up options to broadcast further series.
