MUMBAI: Star India is shutting down its three English-language channels, FX, FX HD and Star Movies Action, with effect from 15 June.
The three channels will not be available to viewers across all addressable platforms 30 days from the date of notice. The public notice was issued by the broadcaster on 15 May.
FX, which is an edgy English entertainment channel, was launched in September 2012 while its HD version FX HD was launched on 23 September 2015. Star Movies Action, which has been positioned as an English action movie channel, was launched in November 2014 to cater to action movie buffs.
Star was building FX as a challenger to Sony Pictures Networks India’s English entertainment channel AXN, while Star Movies Action was positioned as the default destination for action movies.
Incidentally, Star Movies Action was launched after shutting down Fox Action Movies. In April 2015, the company had shut Fox Crime to launch Star Movies Select HD in its place.
It is pertinent to note that FX was at No. 2 in the English entertainment genre ahead of its elder sibling Star World in Week 18 of BARC ratings data.
Star Movies Action, on the other hand, is lagging behind in the English movie genre despite action movies playing a big role in the programming strategy of the channels.
Currently, Star has nine channels in the English entertainment and movie genres. Five of the nine channels are in high definition (HD).
The closure of FX and Star Movies Action will leave the network with two SD channels, Star World and Star Movies, in the English entertainment genre.
Apart from the HD versions of Star World and Star Movies, the network has two more differentiated HD channels in the English entertainment genre, namely Star World Premiere HD and Star Movies Select HD.
Targeted at upscale and discerning audiences, Star World Premiere HD airs the latest seasons close to their US airing while Star Movies Select HD’s proposition is to air critically acclaimed movies 365 days a year.

Starting 15th May, FX India reminds us why India needs Doctor Who

“The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles”-- The Doctor

Mumbai, 6th May 2015: Get set to embark on a time travel adventure of a lifetime! This May, FX prepares to invade Indian Television with the greatest cult science fiction series ever made- Doctor Who. Starting 15th May, anticipation levels will hit the roof as viewers get the much awaited chance to come face to face with the universe’s real hero- every Monday to Friday, 9pm only on FX India.

Ever since its inception, ‘Doctor Who’ has enjoyed the distinction of being one of the greatest science fiction shows with a phenomenal cult following of over 77 million fans across the globe, which only increased after it’s revival in 2005. Winner of 98 Awards and 129 other nominations, this series even holds the Guinness World Record for the largest simulcast of a TV drama - 98 countries across 6 continents! Over the recent years, ‘Doctor Who’ has won over 5 million fans on Facebook, 1.2million followers on Twitter, and in November 2014, the YouTube channel bagged a new subscriber every 41 seconds!

The iconic series follows the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes while working to save civilizations and help people in need. One of the most unique characters of all times, this Time Lord is over 2000 years old and has the power to regenerate when his body becomes damaged. He is a rather unusual hero as he doesn’t have a tank or a warship or even an X-wing fighter to move from one era to another, all he has is a call box named TARDIS. Armed with his favorite accessory, a screwdriver, this time-traveling alien adventurer has vowed to prevent evil forces from harming innocent people or changing history. Instead of mesmerizing superpowers or remarkable physical appearances, he has an extra heart, which is an extraordinary thing in itself. It’s no secret that ‘Doctor Who’ exists to fire our imagination!

Commenting on the cult fan-following and Doctor Who’s travel to India, DOCTOR WHO spokesperson said, “…………… “

While many Indian viewers will get a chance to be introduced to Doctor Who for the first time, the series launch in India will also extend a chance to all the die-hard Doctor Who fans or Whovians as they are famously known as to participate in the global Doctor Who phenomenon by catching the series on their television sets. Doctor Who fans in India have many a times asked for the show to be brought to India!

To give the show an apt promotional platform, FX has created a robust integrated marketing campaign reiterating the channel’s tagline- The Edge of Entertainment. Reaching out to all the ‘edge seekers’, FX India has also made a music video complete with original composition, zany graphics and footage that has been specially created to announce the show’s launch and the impending arrival of the Doctor. With the support of these various engagement activities for this flagship property, multi-dimensional efforts have been initiated to ensure that viewers re-live the ‘Doctor Who’ era in the days to come.

So, get set to embark on a much awaited time travel adventure of a lifetime as FX India prepares to invade Indian Television with the greatest cult series ever made- Doctor Who, starting 15th May, every Monday to Friday at 9pm.

The deal, inked between Star India and BBC Worldwide India marks the largest volume sale of Doctor Who in the country.

“This partnership marks a milestone for us,” said Myleeta Aga, SVP and GM of BBC Worldwide in India. “It will be the first time Whovians in India will be able to participate in the global Doctor Who phenomenon. And it is also the first time we’ve concluded a major deal with Star India.”

“We’ve seen an increasing interest in British drama from our partners in the last 12 months or so,” she continued. “Viewers now recognise the originality of British drama, and this has caused a surge in interest in our drama series like Doctor Who. We are very glad to be working with Star India to bring this very iconic series (including series 9 which is currently being filmed) to viewers in India.” She added.

A Star India spokesperson commented: “We are very excited to be bringing Doctor Who to our viewers in India. Doctor Who is distributed to over 200 territories across the world. Hold on tight - there are thrills and wonders ahead! 51 years ago, the very first episode of Doctor Who was directed by Waris Hussein, born in Lucknow. I like to think we’ve finally come full circle with the new modern series launching in India on FX.”
