The Tongyang Broadcasting Company launched TBC-TV, a commerical channel in June 1965, which showed a mix of entertainment, sport and news programming. However, on the 1st December 1980 the channel was merged into the Korean Broadcasting Service by a special passed by the then president of military authorities, Chun Doo-hwan, when the channel became known as KBS2.

Unlike the primary channel, KBS2 does show advertising.
