TV2 was launched on 30th June 1975, broadcasting initially in the Auckland and Christchurch areas. In December 1976 it was renamed SPTV in order to avoid being associated with the former NZBC channel. In 1980 New Zealand television was re-organised into Television New Zealand and the channel became known as TV2 once more.
