This Week In Doctor Who February 20, 2010 - Vol 13, No 7 The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide since 1998. by Benjamin F. Elliott http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho http://rss.groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/rss http://www.gallifreyanembassy.org/vortex?q=twidw http://thisweekindoctorwho.blogspot.com |

Hello again. After an unexpected 1 week hiatus due to two computers being down at once, TWIDW is back. Hopefully it is legible this time. The Podcast section is omitted this time as I can't access the program that brings me most of my podcasts for now (more computer work needed). |
Some quick notes before we hit the schedules: |
The BBC is promising a new extended trailer promoing this year's Doctor Who series. It will air in the 6PM GMT hour on BBC One and (apparently) the 7PM hour on BBC HD. BBC America in the US is promising to put the trailer on their website as soon as possible after the UK broadcast. I do not know if other broadcasters will get the trailer, though I imagine it will wind up free to everyone online (either legally or illegally) before the weekend is out. I'd advise the BBC to make it available legally to all so they can better gauge the interest. |
The BBC is going to have a 3-D trailer for the new series that will air in UK movie theatres. Don't know if that trailer will extend beyond the British Isles. |
The first episode of the upcoming series will apparently be 60 minutes in the UK (the length of most Christmas specials). Hopefully the BBC will alert other broadcasters with plenty of notice for scheduling. And only provide the 60 minute version - we don't need another 45 or 50 minute chop suey thing floating around driving people away from the TV broadcasts in search of the full version. I will probably start listing the known episode titles next week (again, when the computer is doing better) as we will not consider episode titles to be spoilers. |
UK channel Watch aired the 1996 TV Movie on Thursday, and it created some controversy. Fans were annoyed that the more violent scenes (and the caption stating that the movie was based on the BBC TV serise) were excised. What many people forgot (including me) is that Watch was airing the version of the TV Movie that aired on BBC One in 1996. The movie was edited for content (and to remove that caption) before getting a VHS release and a pre-watershed showing on that Bank Holiday Monday 14 years ago. This edited version has aired on movie channels in the UK before. The full length version of the TV Movie finally aired in the UK in November 1999 on BBC Two as part of a Doctor Who night (and the broadcast was post-watershed). The original DVD release and the upcoming re-release are the full length version with all the story content included, though the caption mentioned above is still excised. Watch will repeat this edited version of the TV Movie on Good Friday 2 April at 1:50PM BST. |
SciFi Channel Spain will be the first broadcaster I know of to air the last 3 Doctor Who specials dubbed in a local language. (The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead have aired dubbed in France and the Netherlands.) SciFi Channel Spain is currently airing the 2008 episodes (along with repeats of the earlier Eccleston/Tennant episodes). For the last 3 weeks of March, they will double up episodes: Journey's End (a 45 minute hacked up version) and 2008 Christmas episode The Next Doctor (a 45 minute hacked up version) on 15 March. Planet of the Dead (apparently uncut) and The Waters of Mars (apparently uncut) on 22 March. The End of Time (both episodes, apparently uncut, though part 2 will have to be commercial free with that time slot) on 29 March. |
Right now it is believed that the new episodes will premiere on BBC One and BBC HD in early April. No other broadcasters have given a specific date (though BBC America and SPACE in Canada are believed to get the episodes sometime in the Spring). Don't be surprised if these episodes take a long time to reach one country or another for whatever reason. I deeply want shows to air the first broadcasts simultaneously around the world, but that is not Doctor Who's current reality. |
The series numbers in TWIDW right now are based on current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat's declaration that this is Doctor Who's 31st series, and that the idea of it being the 5th series is invalid. I will see over the next couple of weeks if I can make this look good and how firmly that declaration holds for the show. I have an alternate plan to label each series based on the year it started in if this system does not work out. We will see how it goes. |
Best wishes to all the readers who will be at the Gallifrey convention in Los Angeles, CA next weekend. I did really want to go this year. My non-appearance is brought to you primarily by Bank Of America (bad reasons, not good). Hope to make it back in 2011. |
