Norway is the latest Doctor Who country. NRK http://www.nrk.no , Norway's equivalent to the BBC, reported to Doctor Who fans via e-mail that NRK2 would get Doctor Who starting in September. This marks the latest broadcaster known to buy the show.
Doctor Who is also being targeted to Latin America, as per this
story from Worldscreen http://www.worldscreen.com/newscurrent.php?
filename=bbc804.htm :
"BBC Worldwide Targets Latin American Buyers
"New York, August 4: This September in Rio de Janeiro, BBC Worldwide
will host its second annual BBC Showcase Latin America.
"The event will be held September 11 to September 13 at the JW
Marriot Hotel Rio de Janeiro. The first BBC Showcase Latin America
took place in Buenos Aires. The event will allow Latin American
broadcasters to screen programs, attend producer presentations and
meet with production teams. Featured programming will include Top Of
The Pops, Dancing with the Stars, Charlie and Lola, Little Robots,
Doctor Who and Bodies. Those slated to attend include
representatives from HBO Ole, Discovery, Canal 22, Televisa
Networks, Canal 4, TV Azteca, Canal 11, Globo TV, Teleamzonas, and
Bandeirantes TV.
"`BBC Worldwide Americas is committed to bringing the very best of
British programming to Latin America,' said Jose Sanchez, the
regional director of Latin America television sales, at BBC
Worldwide. `BBC Showcase Latin America is an excellent opportunity
for us to reach out to Latin American broadcasters and to build on
existing relationships and establish valuable business partnerships
within this market.' "
Prime TV New Zealand http://www.primetv.co.nz has renewed Doctor Who for a second series based on excellent ratings for the channel in the time slot. Series 2 will air in "Winter 2006", which being in the Southern Hemisphere probably means July through September like the current series. The full story is on the Scoop website http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/BU0508/S00113.htm .
BBC7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 continues its radio premiere of Paul
McGann stories with episode 2 of "Storm Warning" Saturday at 6:30PM
and 12:30AM BST. Adjust for local time. Listeners without digital
radios or TVs or outside the UK can hear BBC7 live through the
internet. Episodes available through "listen again" page for 7 days
after broadcast. Episode 1 aired uncut, as it was less than the 29
minute time limit, and was followed by a trailer for the next
episode. Episodes that are more than 29 minutes or that reference
Ramsey the Vortisore after Storm Warning will be edited.
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv finishes series 1 this Saturday at 7:30PM. Midsomer Murders takes the timeslot next week. The original series (now in the Peter Davison era) continues Mondays through Thursdays at about 6PM.
MPT Maryland http://www.mpt.org ran a pledge drive last weekend during The Mind of Evil. It was a new pledge segment, with recently released DVD The Leisure Hive as one of the pledge items. Early in the pledge drive, the announcer (who longtime MPT viewers would remember as Bob The Vid Tech) mentioned that MPT wanted viewer support to keep Doctor Who on air. Later in the pledge drive they stopped mentioning the issue of Doctor Who continuing on the station. To the best of anyone's knowledge, BBC Worldwide Americas is still refusing to renew contracts with public TV stations for Doctor Who, so whenever the current deal ends, MPT loses Doctor Who. As I am in MPT's broadcast area myself I hope to be wrong, but whether or not you pledged last weekend, assume the show will leave MPT (and IPTV Iowa) soon.
BBC Kids http://www.bbckids.ca in Canada is changing its schedule on Monday 29 August. Doctor Who will lose its 2AM weeknight timeslot. It's new time period is unknown as of this writing.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
