THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO May 11, 2005 - Vol 8, No 19 The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide. by Benjamin F. Elliott http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho |

British Columbia Doctor Who viewers (and US viewers who get the CBC from a British Columbia station - probably CBUT Vancouver) - take note!!! You will not get episode 7 - The Long Game - on May 17th like the rest of Canada. British Columbia election results will air instead. You will get The Long Game at 5PM PDT on Saturday May 21st. |
All other Canadian Provinces!!! - Doctor Who will air at its regular time on May 17th. You only need to beware if you have access to time shifted CBC channels - don't try to catch the show on the Pacific Feed. |
CBC http://www.cbc.ca/television has finally gotten episode 1 of their documentary series The Planet Of The Doctor http://www.cbc.ca/planetofthedoctor online. Expect 5 more episodes over the next few weeks. The format is much more "retro" than the BBC's Doctor Who Confidential. Deliberate washed out color with a clear focus on the show's history. If episode 1 is an example, there will be few or no clips of Doctor Who from either the old or new series. |
BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone is rearranging its entire Saturday lineup on 21 May for the annual Eurovision music competition. Doctor Who (The Empty Child) will go out at 6:25PM so that the Lottery show can air in full before Eurovision. This is hoped to be the only time in this run of episodes that Doctor Who will be forced to air at a special time. BBC Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree will thus air Doctor Who Confidential at 7:20PM to keep it close to Doctor Who's broadcast time. Doctor Who fares better than other BBC shows that weekend. Casualty gets pre-empted. Strictly Dance Fever gets bumped to Sunday. Strictly Come Dancing's bump will affect BBC Three's Sunday repeats - Doctor Who (The Empty Child) airs at 7:45PM and Doctor Who Confidential: Cut Down airs at 8:30PM. |
Oh, Doctor Who Confidential: Cut Down is the correct name for the 15 minute versions of Confidential that began airing on 1 May. Apparently the 22 May installment (the one shoved to 8:30PM) will be the last, with the Sunday version restored to 30 minutes for the final 4 weeks of the series. |
Doctor Who won its time slot again on BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone Saturday, with roughly 7.51 million overnight viewers versus Celebrity Wrestling's 2.56 million overnight viewers. This was a great result for the lightly advertised episode, as Doctor Who seems to have a large reliable weekly audience. ITV http://www.itv.co.uk has canceled time period competitor Celebrity Wrestling after 3 episodes and audiences shrinking each week against the Doctor. A last Celebrity Wrestling episode will air this weekend. The remaining 4 episodes may or may not air somewhere in the future. Starting 21 May Doctor Who will battle - the Star Wars movies. First up - Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace - 5:20 to 7:10PM, 7:25PM to 8PM (news broadcast at 7:10, just as Doctor Who ends that night). |
Just 10 days till Doctor Who premieres in Australia on the ABC http://www.abc.net.au/tv . Probably 9 days by the time Australian readers get this column due to the time difference. Here's hoping it succeeds for you like it has for the BBC. |
No new networks have bought Doctor Who yet. Still just networks in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and The Netherlands. When networks buy the show, the news will likely turn up at the BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc/pressoffice and C21 Media http://www.c21media.net . |

Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org recently sent a viewer a letter regarding the current status of their Doctor Who broadcasts. Recently MPT repeated the Troughton and (most of) the Pertwee stories, followed by 3 stories from Tom Baker in the Key To Time season, and now back to Troughton. Thank you for contacting Maryland Public Television. At present we'll only be airing the 30 episodes of "Dr. Who" that we currently have in house. The 30 episodes of "Dr. Who" that MPT has to air now are all Troughton and Pertwee. We apologize for the changes to the schedule and hope that you'll bear with us and allow us some flexibility while we work towards securing additional episodes. If you're a Whovian, you're probably already aware that new episodes of Dr. Who that are currently in production. At this time we don't know if the BBC is going to offer us the rights to air the new series. I'm awaiting information from the person in programming that serves as liaison between the station and the BBC. Naturally, we've been inquiring about Dr. Who, and the new episodes, however ..we haven't reached an answer yet. In all honesty, I don't anticipate a firm response for at least several weeks. We've been in a holding pattern for months, unable to air any episodes save those we had in the last package from the BBC until a decision is made by the BBC about the program and rights. At this point our hands are tied. Unfortunately, at this point it appears to be a game of "wait and see". Here is a web link for you to read about the new Dr. Who series: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/newtv/index.shtml This is the main page for the Dr. Who series website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho Angela Myers Viewer Services Coordinator, Maryland Public Television |
