The Doctor returns - except Clara is having trouble finding him after the skies above the Earth are frozen by shadowy forces from another world. It seems he's in hiding as old enemies resurface and past actions wreak new havoc across the cosmos.

Overnights: 4.58 million watched The Magician's Apprentice in the UK, according to unofficial overnight viewing figures. Doctor Who was the highest rated show on BBC One for the day, just above Casualty, which had 4.34 million watching. It was also the second-highest for the day. with The X Factor achieving top spot with 7.33 million.

Finals (+7 days): The final rating is slightly down on last year, where the majority of the season rated around 6.9 million viewers.The rating puts Doctor Who at the 13th most watched programme of the week on all UK Television, and the 4th most watched programme on BBC One. The Great British Bake Off topped the charts with a consolidated audience of 12.35 million viewers, over 2 million higher than its nearest rival, ITV's Downton Abbey, which had 9.9 million viewers.The figures do not include those who watched on the BBC iPlayer, where The Magician's Apprentice had over 1.3 million download requests in the week following transmission.

The BBC's iPlayer performance figures reported that the episode was requested 1.549m times to the end of the month, making it the seventh most requested programme in September - it was only beaten by episodes of Doctor Foster and The Great British Bakeoff (the figure does not include requests via Virgin Media or Sky).
