Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) finds herself further away from home than ever before when the TARDIS lands on a strange, dark planet. On exploration Rose and The Doctor (David Tennant) discover they are on a Sanctuary Base, designed for deep-space expeditions and Rose notices the English words "Welcome to Hell" scrawled on a wall.

Soon they meet the crew who are waited on by humanoid aliens, the Ood, a slave race which serve as maintenance personnel.

The Doctor learns that they are on a planet which is orbiting a black hole and that the crew are drilling to the centre of the world, to claim the power that keeps them safe. Trapped with the expedition and the mysterious Ood, the Time Travellers face an even greater danger as something ancient beneath the planet's surface begins to awaken.
