As the Family of Blood holds Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) and Joan Redfern (Jessica Hynes) captive, John Smith (David Tennant) stands by helplessly. When Tim Latimer (Thomas Sangster) briefly opens the fob watch containing the Doctor's essence, the Family is momentarily confused by the Doctor's scent, allowing Martha to grab a gun from Mother of Mine (Rebeka Staton). Holding her hostage, Martha points the gun at Son of Mine (Harry Lloyd) and tells Smith to evacuate the building. The watch tells Latimer to keep it hidden.

Smith, Joan and Martha race back to the school where Smith sounds the alarm and with the headmaster, prepares the schoolboys for battle. While Joan slowly comes to believe the origins of Martha and the Doctor, Latimer hides with the watch.

John Smith continues to refuse his destiny as a Time Lord, but in his journal Joan discovers the awful consequences of the Family gaining what they seek and, with Martha and Latimer and the watch, takes terrible measures to save the whole of history.
