This Week In Doctor Who PBS and Podcasts September 12, 2009 - Vol 1, No 35 All the Public TV Listings And Podcast Pronouncements by Benjamin F. USA - Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007 series with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) are now distributed to Public TV stations by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV. Series 4 also seems to be available to buy - start date for Series 4 on Public TV stations is unknown. BBC Worldwide Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to stations. |
|
If you're a PBS station airing Doctor Who and I don't have you listed - contact me. If you're watching Doctor Who on a PBS station that's not on this list - contact me AND tell me the day, time, and episode that aired so I can track things down (some stations have websites where schedule information is - lacking). |
|

The public TV stations known to have bought The Runaway Bride and Series 3: WXXI 21 Rochester, NY WTTW 11 Chicago, IL (currently in first run) WGVU/WGVK 35,52 Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, MI WILL 12 Urbana, IL WTVP 47 Peoria, IL Iowa Public TV Idaho Public TV Wisconsin Public TV (currently in first run) Milwaukee Public TV KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT OETA Oklahoma KLRU 18 Austin, TX Alaska Public TV WSKG/WSKA 46,30 Binghamton/Elmira, NY KERA 13 Dallas, TX (currently in first run) |
Now, I am confident that there are more stations with rights to Series 3 than that. But these are the stations who have contacted me or scheduled the show. Unlike previous years, we are in the dark till a station comes forward or new Who appears in their schedules. |
|
Series 2 is currently available to public TV stations in an American Public TV package until March 31, 2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required to do so. American Public TV is no longer offering Series 1 - I do not know if BBC Worldwide Americas will offer those stations to public TV stations now or not. |
|
2 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989), but not New Who. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA is airing Peter Davison episodes. WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA is airing Tom Baker episodes. |

Many of the podcasters in the UK (along with Who fans in general) were at the Whooverville convention on Sunday. There was a podcasting panel, so I imagine it will be a hot topic on Who related podcasts for a while, like the panel at the Gallifrey convention was for podcasters in February. |

This section is always open to discovering new Doctor Who/Sarah Jane/K9/Torchwood material of note. If you think your webcast/podcast (or somebody else's) belongs in this section, e-mail me. |

Radio Free Skaro http://www.radiofreeskaro.com The 3 Canadians (Warren, Steven, Chris) get together on the weekends for about an hour or more to discuss the latest in Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sarah Jane in a fairly amusing manner. When one is away, the 4th Canadian (Katrina) will play. Or will she - Katrina and her friend Nat have launched a spinoff podcast called "Bridging The Rift". Current Episodes: -157 - "Byrne, Baby, Byrne" - The Radio Free Skaro team examine the writing career of Johnny Byrne, who contributed several Doctor Who scripts and the character of Nyssa to the classic series. Then they opted to do a commentary on the first 2 episodes of Warriors Of The Deep, as they were already having Myrka flashbacks so you may as well deal with it. Meanwhile, Warren has a new job - blogging for SPACE, Canada's network for firstrun Doctor Who and Torchwood. -"Radio Free Skaro Presents Podcast: The Whooverville Podcast Panel" - In the earlier years of Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery!, the old hosts (generally Alaistair Cooke and Vincent Price) had some time to put the featured imported program into context for the viewers before starting the tape. This was useful if you liked context and if you liked the host, as they were almost NEVER in the main feature. Well, the Radio Free Skaro hosts were not at the Whooverville Panel (the Atlantic Ocean makes car and bus travel difficult), but there is an extended introduction before they get to the raw footage. Coming Soon: Episode 158 - "The Pedantor Of Fenric" - Commentary on the second half of Warriors Of The Deep. Speculation on whether the BBC America trailer for Waters Of Mars will have anything new. CBC's broadcast of the edited Journey's End may be the last time Doctor Who airs on over the air TV in Canada for a long time to come - see the funeral comments. Assuming a funeral has party hats, streamers, cake ... |

DWO Whocast http://www.thewhocast.com Trevor from Australia and Marty from the UK talk Doctor Who with themselves, others, and teddy bears dressed as doctors. Now with a rock version of the opening theme, the Whocast continues to ask the questions that pop in to their heads. Regular correspondent - James. Frequent guest - Michael of the Tin Dog podcast. Current episode: #133. The man, the legend, the Jon Pertwee, part 2! This episode focuses on the first 3 series of Jon Pertwee's run as the Doctor. The years where the Doctor was stranded on Earth. Due to when the podcasts downloaded, I do not know if the Whooverville convention gets mentioned (Marty was there, along with "The Head Of Pertwee", so it could have tied in). Coming soon: #134. The man, the legend, the Jon Pertwee, part 3! All good things come to an end. But as Pertwee will learn, you're never really done with the Doctor as long as you live ... |

The resulting show covers Doctor Who, anything else sci-fi related, and can go wildly off in all directions. Show founder West has alerted Dave AC and West that he will return full time to hosting duties with episode 101. Chats open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Current episode - 100. Dave AC and Ian retire as the regular guest hosts. Final episodes of TV shows are discussed. And could we have celebrity guest appearances? Next Episode - Sunday 2PM EDT/7PM BST/11AM PDT (postponed from an earlier date) - 101. New Beginnings. West and CIA are back! Live! Late breaking! The episode was still scheduled as TWIDW went to press. |

The Cultdom Collective http://www.cultdom.com Live Talkshoe Broadcasts http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/54821 call in number (724) 444-7444 call id 54821 Dave AC and Ian have guest hosted CIA so much that they developed a taste for doing it themselves. So they are launching their own show starting Sunday 2 August. Now the two shows will be side by side, one after the other for twice the chatting on twice the topics. Chats open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Current episode: 6. Saturday Morning Kids Cult TV. A look back to when there was original Saturday morning kids programming (not that long ago) and there was a fair amount of sci-fi and fantasy in it. The show was mainly run by Ian as Dave was present, but recovering from Whooverville. Upcoming episode: Sunday 3:30PM EDT/12:30PM PDT/8:30PM BST - Does Superman Suck? I'm not going to speculate on this subject title with a 10 foot fiberglass cape. 20 September 3:30PM EDT/12:30PM PDT/8:30PM BST - Samantha's Slash Spectacular. Samantha (Romana 2, host of The Wailing Fangirl) is expected to co-host this exploration into the history of slash fan fiction. Adults only episode. 27 September 3:30PM EDT/12:30PM PDT/8:30PM BST - Has Bond Shaken His Last Martini? This episode is not expected to focus on the James Bond Jr. animated series from the 1990s. |

Two Minute Time Lord http://twominutetimelord.com A bite-sized commentary and revew show. Host Chip's interest was rekindled by the 2005 revival. He believes in balancing old fandom and new viewers, respect for the past and breaking the rules. He tries to keep his pontifications to 120 seconds, because we're ALL in a hurry these days. Current Episodes: #60 - Time Dilation - Chip's full interview with Toby Hadoke, comedian and mind behind Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf. #61 - Why Warren's (Mostly) Right About Romance - Reacting to Warren Frey's blog on SPACE's website http://www.spacecast.com , Chip essentially does what he says in the title. Agrees a lot, but has some caveots. |

A feast of topics for our hosts, as they talked about Tom Baker audio, David Tennant animated, James Marsters, Eric Hudson, World Of Warcraft, the Black Guardian boxset, and much more. And while I wasn't surprised that my feedback got read out, I was pleasantly surprised that it was Dramatised. My notes did "not" mention My Little Pony - that was courtesy the editing of Karen Dunn. Dalek purists can address their notes accordingly. Episode 54 - "Whooverville, Whatterville, Where-erville, Whenerville, Whyerville?" - An all new episode of Staggering Stories, coming Sunday. You've heard the Whooverville panel on various podcasts. But have you heard the thoughts of Adam, the guy who brought the audio recorder? |

The Flashing Blade Podcast http://www.flashingblade.org.uk Tony Gallichan returns to podcast land with new podcaster Jo! to look at Doctor Who and matters of interest. Tony grew up with UK fandom and knows all the cliches. Jo! - didn't. Flashing Blade wants to be known as the podcast that would like a nice cup of tea. Trivia point - Russell T Davies mentions the original Flashing Blade show during the podcast commentary for The Doctor's Daughter. I was relistening to the commentary for some reason this week and I finally caught the reference. Current episodes: 14 - Patient Zero and Rose. Jo! and the Tony look back to the mists of 2005, when Doctor Who returned to our TV screens. They also look to modern times, where new Big Finish audio "Patient Zero" has an older Doctor (Colin Baker) and a newer companion (Charley Pollard, played by India Fisher). More cat antics. Recorded early as they prepared for Whooverville. 15 - SPACE: 1999 Plus 10! With special theme tune and 70s graphics. Colin Baker, Jo!, and the Tony went to Whooverville. The head of a previous Doctor was carried around as a trophy. Sound conditions were ... erratic. Lots of convention talk, and the unedited podcast panel. I could not identify a difference in the sound quality between this version and the Radio Free Skaro version (probably as it is the same raw audio). This episode was released early, so don't expect an episode this Sunday (the 13th). Flashing Blade is due to return on 20 September. Coming Soon: A review of "The Holy Terror" and Image of the Fendahl. And possibly some thoughts on one of the Doctor's most obscure companions, if I can make the time to write down those thoughts and send them in. |

Bridging The Rift http://bridgingtherift.wordpress.com Katrina (Radio Free Skaro) and Nat launch a new show bringing the worlds of Doctor Who fandom, Torchwood fandom, Sarah Jane Adventures fandom, K9 fandom, and other areas together. Each week - a special guest co-host. 7. But Is It Canon? Tom Dickinson (of The Cloister Room Podcast and the Trock Band Blinovich) is the guest as our team examines the history of canon, how other sci-fi universes deal with canon, and whether the Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane/K9/Bernice Summerfield/Faction Paradox universe has a canon. I was surprised at how recently canon issues had crossed over to popular fiction - Sherlock Holmes? Meanwhile, the panel look at some more fan contributions to the internet, and come across a cake. A cake that's bigger on the inside than the outside. See the cake, how it was made, and how it was eaten, at http://www.doitmyself.org/2009/08/tardis-cake.html . |

Doctor Who Review Today http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/22756 call in number (724) 444-7444 talkshoe id 22756 Live editions Late Fridays 1AM EDT/10PM PDT/6AM BST every couple of weeks Robert Carrie King reviews Doctor Who topics (DVDs and news, mostly) on this Talkshoe program. Frequent cast member on CIA: Cultdom In Audio. Most recent episode - Episode 42. Attack Of The Cybermen and a second attempt at Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday. Robert and everyone else who turns up (Darth Skeptical and Samantha among them) talk about 2 Cybermen stories. One story was full of plot twists tying together popular fan theories and fan fiction, setting up unlikely returns and making the Doctor look at someone in a different light. And the other was Attack Of The Cybermen. Any classic series fans probably just groaned. Apologies. Actually, BOTH stories do all those things. But Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday is much more popular than Attack Of The Cybermen, and hopefully this episode explored that issue. |

The Tennantcast http://tennantcast.com Kelsey, Kari, Flossie, and friends get together to dish on the latest David Tennant news. 17 - I'm A Pony! The title is inspired by Richard Simmons, and not by backing music in the Staggering Stories podcast. Fabio!, Richard Simmons, and a screencap from the Friday Night Project throw the team into a discussion on alternate careers for David Tennant if the acting experiment doesn't work out. Just wanted to note - the sound quality for the last couple of Tennantcast episodes has been much improved. The people in front of (and working secretly behind) the microphones - congrats. |

The Wailing Fangirl http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/22228 Samantha (Romana 2) explores Doctor Who and fandom in Australia, sometimes with the aid of the ladies of the Gallifreyan Time Love Brigade. Frequent cast member on CIA: Cultdom In Audio. Current episode: 12. The gang look at Doctor 11 and Amy Pond's fashion style. Comic-Con reactions are covered. And a second look at Torchwood: Children Of Earth after a month of reflection. |
|
A Podcast Of Impossible Things http://podcastofimpossiblethings.blogspot.com Cardiff-based Doctor Who fans get together to discuss the latest Doctor Who and do a full length commentary on new Doctor Who episodes. Bigger On The Inside http://www.earth-2.net Mike and Dan decide to do their own podcast exploring each Doctor Who story in broadcast order. It is a very different style from Jonathan's. Again - can they pull it off? Part of the Earth-2 family of podcasts. Warning - explicit language (swearing). If your headphones leak any sound at all - do not listen at work. Current episode - 21. The Faceless Ones and The Evil Of The Daleks. Learn why the hosts are subjecting themselves to just the reconstructions on missing episodes - the logic makes sense, though I'd cheat and play the CD as the audio while looking at the reconstruction. Ben and Polly leave in a hurry, as Victoria arrives in a hurry. Are these the episodes where Jamie comes into his own? |

Hoo On Who http://hooonwho.com Fan reviews of recent Doctor Who DVDs by David Hooie, frequently with a guest co-host. Current episode: #13. Planet Of The Dead - Blu-Ray Release. David listens to the most recent Doctor Who story, the first one released on the Blu-Ray format. While all Doctor Who could be released on Blu-Ray if people wanted to, this was the first story filmed in HD, and therefore the first one where you would see noticable quality improvements (you could fit more classic episodes on a Blu-Ray and more extras and have less compression, but it won't radically change the picture/sound quality of the source material). So, how did the BBC do on their first Doctor Who Blu-Ray release? Opinion - mixed. |
|
The Cloister Room http://thecloisterroom.com Tom Dickinson begins a solo Doctor Who podcast effort with short shows on short subject that get to the point, bulldoze through the point, back up to ground the point down some more, then flee the scene before the police arrive. Current episode - 4. Requiem For A Drama. Tom returns after 4 weeks away and looks at shows that are cancelled before their time. Is it worth investing in a show that might soon (or has already) been cancelled. Tom's view is similar to mine (yes, it is worth it), but you're downloading Tom's show for his opinions on this. |

Tim's Take On ... Tim Drury's podcast on various issues. Available on iTunes. |
|
The Big Finish Podcast http://www.bigfinish.com/podcast Big Finish podcasts at least once a month to discuss their Doctor Who and other projects (Sapphire and Steel, Stargate (!), Dark Shadows, Bernice Summerfield, etc). Current episode - Rob Shearman special. Instead of doing an August episode, Nick Briggs parties with Rob and inserts what news updates there are in when the conversation slows a tad. Rob's short story work with Big Finish dominates the discussion, but he has a past with the company going back to its early audios. While Rob has been on podcasts before, this may be the first time that his name wound up in the episode title, and that counts for something. |
|
Tachyon TV http://www.tachyon-tv.co.uk Irregular and irreverant podcast looking at the world of Doctor Who with a funhouse mirror and coming out the other side holding a plush toy that wasn't really the one you wanted but you'll keep it anyway because you can give it to your girlfriend to impress her. It's that kind of show. Current segment - a short appeal by "Rula Lenska". |
|
MMM Commentaries/Fantragic http://www.mmmcommentaries.com Roving Australian podcasting gang, including Trevor from the DWO Whocast. Commentaries on Doctor Who episodes, Star Wars films, some Stargate stuff, and others. The Frantragic episodes look at Doctor Who and other sci-fi news. Fantragic episodes are on a different iTunes feed from MMM Commentary episodes. Current Doctor Who episode - Journey's End. If the description in the iTunes tag is anything to go by, this running commentary on the Doctor Who Series 4 finale will not have a happy ending.. |
