Friday 21st July 2000

by Benjamin F. Elliott
"Rest - is for the weary. Sleep is for the dead!" - 6th Doctor, Attack of the Cybermen
Very little to report this week. Probably just a short lull in a hot summer of activity.
As American fans know, the major Presidential conventions are coming up. If you are going to the Republican Convention in Philadelphia or joining the protestors there remember that WYBE 35 airs 2 episodes Saturday nights at 11PM. If you are going to the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles or joining the protestors there remember that there is no local station - sorry. And you can always check to see if your hotel room / house you're staying at has BBC America.

The piercing British comedy show that includes Doctor Who parodies continues. Last time Tom Baker got caught lapsing into playing the Doctor when he was supposed to be promoting dish detergent, and the Daleks' battle against the Doctor was rudely interrupted by Graham Norton, who wanted to lead a panel discussion on the matter.

Sun 8:45-10:50AM BST Battlefield movie
Week nine of the Summer of Syl. Several years in the future (the 1990s), an archaeological dig is interrupted by U*N*I*T, nuclear weapons, soldiers from another dimension, a funny little man known as The Doctor, and a retiree formerly known as Brigadier Alaistair Gordon Lethbridge- Stewart. All these old forces, thought to be obsolete, are dangerously more powerful than anyone thought. Nuclear war may be the price to pay for letting them meet. Guest starring Jean Marsh.

But when the TARDIS pitches him into another universe where the same project is underway, the Doctor is finally forced to take notice. But now, no one will listen.
Mon-Tue 11:30PM AEST Terror of the Autons eps 3 - 4 of 4
Colour-restored - hopefully the version made for but not used by BBC2, otherwise it will be the original colour cleanup from a few years ago. The Master continues his efforts to kill the Doctor to keep the Doctor from stopping the Auton invasion. Given the Auton's hatred of all organic life, you'd think the Master would think a bit farther ahead.
Wed-Fri 11:30PM AEST The Mind of Evil eps 1 - 3 of 6
The 3rd Doctor investigates the latest wacky idea to "reformulate" killers that society no longer wants to kill but doesn't want to invite to tea parties either. Somehow, the device intended to cure killers may be a killer itself. Meanwhile, U.N.I.T has to deal with a World Peace Conference and a nuclear missile disposal at the same time. Apparently MI-5, MI-6, the police, the army, and everyone else were unavailable.

Last seen in 1993 on New Zealand TV. 1066. Ancient England. War is about to break out. Life will change forever. In the growing tension, a lone monk in an abandoned monastery fails to draw the attention his presence requires, at least until the Doctor shows up.

Mon-Wed The Seeds of Doom eps 1 - 6 of 6

"Miss Smith, we're needed! Alien seed pods were just found in Antarctica, and I think the idiots down there might try to awaken them. We need to pretend to still be working for U.N.I.T, get down there, take the pods, and dispose of these hazards. In case things get rough, remember to practice your kickboxing. What, you don't kickbox? I guess we'll just have to hope that no homicidal botanists send down assassins to try to steal the pods, then.
Thu-Fri The Masque of Mandragora eps 1 - 4 of 4
Note to Main Console Room: "I did warn you that if you kept on malfunctioning, I would try the other room. And yes, I appreciate the irony that the other console room promptly let in an angry piece of Mandragora energy that took us to 15th Century Italy and tried to create a new Dark Ages on Earth. But it will be at least a full season before I bother giving you another chance." - Doctor

Sat 11:30PM EDT The Android Invasion eps 2+3 of 4
The Doctor discovers evidence that he may not have landed in Britain after all. I'd have to agree with him. How can it be England without any tourists poking their noses everywhere? Ok, maybe he noticed the unbelievable currency and the androids more, but late 20th Century England without tourists is simply ridiculous.
