On a 51st century ship, the Doctor (David Tennant), Rose (Billie Piper) and Mickey (Noel Clarke) find time windows leading to 18th century France where a young girl Reinette, (Jessica Atkins) and the court at Versailles are under attack from sinister clockwork killers.

Leaving his spaceship and entering a bedroom through its fireplace, the Doctor discovers that a clockwork man wearing a mask and period dress has been scanning Reinette's brain and questions why the creature would punch a hole in the universe for a young girl's brain. He chases the clockwork man back through the fireplace, removes its mask and discovers to his delight space-age clockwork. But the clockwork man teleports himself away. When the Doctor returns through the fireplace to Reinette years have passed and she is now Reinette Poisson (Sophia Myles), actress, courtesan, the mistress of King Louis XV...

Rise Of The Cybermen (Part 1) Saturday August 12, 7.30pm After the TARDIS makes a crash landing on a parallel Earth, Rose discovers her father (Shaun Dingwall) is alive and rich, Mickey encounters his alternative self and the Doctor meets one of his oldest and deadliest foes.

John Lumic (Roger Lloyd Pack) of Cybus Industries has had his engineers make the "ultimate upgrade", a method of sustaining the human brain indefinitely. Lumic's henchman Crane (Colin Spaull) lures homeless people to a factory where they are upgraded to "Human 2", the next level of mankind.

Rose and the Doctor go undercover as serving staff at a party at the parallel Jackie (Camille Coduri) and Pete's home. The Doctor sees Lumic's presentation on a laptop computer and is horrified at the familiar design of the prototypes.
