The TARDIS arrives on Fang Rock, a small island off the English coast, around the start of the 20th Century. The Doctor and Leela seek shelter at a lighthouse where the island's only inhabitants - Ben, Vince and Reuben - operate the recently-installed electric lamp to warn ships off the treacherous rocks.

The Doctor and Romana are enjoying a holiday in Paris, 1979, when they become aware of a fracture in time. During a visit to the Louvre to see da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the Doctor purloins from a stranger, Countess Scarlioni, a bracelet that is actually an alien scanner device.

The tracer detects the second segment on the planet Calufrax. The TARDIS makes a bumpy landing, and the Doctor and Romana soon discover that they are not on Calufrax at all. They are in fact on Zanak, a planet that has been hollowed out and fitted with engines so that it can transmat through space and materialise around others - such as Calufrax - to plunder their mineral wealth, leaving them as shrunken husks held by gravitational forces in a "trophy room".

The TARDIS brings the new Doctor and his companions Polly and Ben to an Earth colony on planet Vulcan where a murder has been committed.

Posing as an official Examiner from Earth summoned to investigate a space capsule, the Doctor warns the scientist, Lesterson, of the dire consequences of reactivating the dormant Daleks.

Polly is taken prisoner by the rebels who intend to use the Daleks to take control of the Earth colony. The Doctor discovers that all three Daleks have now been reactivated.

Scientist Lesterson is driven insane when he discovers that the Daleks are reproducing themselves and preparing to seize control of the Earth colony.
