The four-day event, which started yesterday at ACC Liverpool, plays host to over 700 of the world’s top TV buyers including IBA, YES and Al Jazeera from the Middle East and Africa’s MNet.

(article edited for brevity)

Doctor Who (Series 5, 6, 7) will premiere on Al Jazeera’s children’s channel. Meanwhile Al Jazeera Documentary Channel has bought 200 hours of documentary, current affairs, science and natural history programming including Attenborough’s Giant Egg, India on Four Wheels, Panorama: Poor America, Panorama: Price Tag Wars, Transit of Venus and True Stories (series 2-4).

Paola Tonella, Territory Manager Middle East & Africa, Sales & Distribution, BBC Worldwide said, “Drama is topping the bill at this year’s Showcase and it’s clear that BBC Worldwide’s programming with its quality scripts and first class production values are extremely attractive to global buyers. We are very proud of the Showcase slate, and I’m delighted we have completed important deals for these series, as well as our premium blue-chip documentaries, to key broadcasters in this region.”

Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC) has recently enhanced its partnership with BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC to offer a wide range of new television shows for its Arab audiences.

As a result of this agreement, JCC will be able to offer over 180 hours of new BBC programming with a range of genres such as natural history, pre-teen content, adventure, comedy and animation. The shows are fun, appealing and informative, and consistent with JCC’s content strategy around a strict selection process to ensure that all broadcasted content supports children’s self-esteem, creative thinking, and interactivity, thus becoming a part of their learning process. All programs will be dubbed into classical Arabic and will be broadcast on JCCTV and Baraem TV in early 2013.

Commenting on the deal, Rashed Al Qurese, Acting Director of Sales and Media Rights, JCC said: “Both JCC and BBC have a strong tradition of providing quality entertainment to their audiences. This new selection of creative and intelligent series will expand on our schedule of programming that children will love and parents will trust.”

Natasha Hussain, Territory Manager Middle East & Africa, BBC Worldwide added: “This deal further builds on the strong relationship we have with Al Jazeera Children’s Channel. We have a real breadth of engaging and informative programming in our Children’s catalogue so it’s great to see some of our exciting live-action drama and documentary content such as MI High and Deadly 60 licensed by the channel for the first time.”

Programming includes original wildlife documentaries such as Deadly 60 and Deadly 360, and the natural history children’s series Andy’s Wild Adventures. Other shows include Leonardo – the exploits of young Leonardo Da Vinci and MI High, an adventure comedy about a division of teen spies. Animated comedy shows include Me and My Monsters; a comedy show combining puppets and live action, and In The Night Garden, a televisual representation of a nursery rhyme picture book for preschoolers on Baraem TV.

Another new show is Baby Jake, a live action/animation series featuring a nine-month old baby living in a windmill with his parents and ten other children. The selected programming also includes The Adventures of Abney and Teal – animated adventures of two friends, in the middle of the big city.

JCC continues to provide responsible and entertaining content in-house as well as from international providers to ensure the channel remains as the preferred channel of choice in Arab homes everywhere while upholding Arabic values and culture.
