THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - December 1, 2000
by Benjamin F. Elliott
Welcome to the weekly digest of Doctor Who broadcasts on TV and the radio.
Well, pledge season on US PBS stations is in full swing, which means that the National Who Night is finally getting some of its national airings. For those who have forgotten, National Who Night was filmed at WQED in Pittsburgh back in October. Based on a viewer poll, the movie version of Remembrance of the Daleks was the featured story, with Sylvester McCoy in the studio at a full manic boil during the pledge breaks. Can the set hold together? Will TJ Lubinsky escape the spoons? A night to celebrate the fun of Doctor Who. And hopefully raise some money to convince PBS stations that fans will still support the series.
Current list of stations airing the National Who Night:
1) KBTC/KCKA/K65BU Tacoma/Centralia/Gray's River, WA - Sat, December 2nd 7-10PM PST
2) MPT Maryland - Sat, December 2nd 11:15PM-2AM EST
3b) WCET Cincinnati, OH - Sat, December 2nd 11:30PM-2:30AM EST
4) NHPTV New Hampshire - Sun, December 10th 3-6PM EST
5) IPTV Iowa - March
6) WYIN Gary, IN (Chicago, IL) - ???
7) KBDI/K32EO Denver/Colorado Springs, CO - ???
8) WQED/WQEX Pittsburgh, PA - Sat, October 21st 10PM-1AM EDT - already aired
3a) WCET Cincinnati, OH - Sat, November 18th 9:30PM-12:30AM EST - already aired
Meanwhile, the KTEH Doctor Who Night with Sylvester McCoy and Carole Ann Ford will rerun on December 3rd at 8PM PST on that San Jose, CA PBS station. It is a direct repeat of what aired in October. This time, KTEH hopes that the TV guides will actually list the special, as it was erroneously called "cooking shows" last time. 2 1st Doctor episodes and 3 Sylvester McCoy episodes air in the night. Pledge benefits available for viewers and anyone who wants to call in their support:
$60 - Disappearing TARDIS mug (2 at $120)
$60 - History Of The Universe book
$90 - Paul McGann T-Shirt (ltd number)
$120 - pick a video (An Unearthly Child, Survival, or Curse Of Fatal Death)
$180 - The Dalek Invasion Of Earth double video
$240 - An Unearthly Child, Survival, and a membership to Gallifrey 2001
$500 - all the videos and a mug
$800 - same as the $500 level, but with a diamond logo sweat shirt thrown in

People interested in pledging money to support KTEH should call 1-800-225-5454 or 1-408-795- 5454 during the special.
Some things to note:
1) Just after last week's column went to press, it turned out that UKTV in Australia was going to air the 1996 Doctor Who movie on Saturday the 25th at 2:30PM and 1AM AEDT.
2) Also, the premiere of Joey Reynolds' sci-fi news/talk show on WPBR-AM 1340 in West Palm Beach, FL was scheduled at the last minute on Sunday the 26th at 11:05PM EST. WPBR had been off the air due to a fire, which made predicting when Joey's show would premiere impossible. It was an all-Doctor Who first episode, with archival interviews with several Doctor Who stars and a live conversation with myself, where Joey graciously advertised This Week to the West Palm Beach audience.

Sat 11PM EST Earthshock eps 1+2 of 4
A fight with Adric lures the 5th Doctor into a cave where soldiers are investigating a rash of deaths. Earthshock has the rare honor of having 2 episode endings that caught the audience in England by surprise, as opposed to traditional plot twists which made news before they aired. In case anyone reading this in WYBE's broadcast area doesn't know what the twists are, I'm not telling.
MPT Maryland 22,28,31,36,62,67

Sat 11:15PM-2AM EST National Doctor Who Night
My local-ish station gets around to airing the Who Night. Now, if it can get a good enough showing, maybe we can convince the station that they should let a Doctor Who special get a prime time spot next time, instead of late night. Could begin and/or end later then indicated times.
WUSF 16 Tampa, FL

Sat 11:30PM EST Time and the Rani ep 2 of 4 OR Paradise Towers ep 2 of 4 OR Paradise Towers ep 3 of 4
What is it with Florida right now? Seems they aired Paradise Towers episode 1 instead of Time and the Rani episode 1 two weeks ago. Then they aired Time and the Rani episode 1 last week, presumably to get on track. Now they've scheduled Paradise Towers episode 3 for this weekend. Whatever happens, I'm fairly certain it will star Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor.
