The channel was launched as Georgia Educational Television on 23rd May 1960, and became Georgia Public Television under the Georgia Public Television Commission in 1970. During 1995 the company became Georgia Public Broadcasting, with the channel eventually changing to the name in early 2004.

Doctor Who arrived on GPT in 1983 with the broadcast of The Five Doctors, with Tom Baker episodes following at the end of the year. Broadcasts continued through to 1992, with all of the colour episodes available been shown at least once. In 2007 the channel joined other PBS stations in broadcasting the first series with Christopher Eccleston, but only the once and did not carry on with the modern series.
