Spin-off series Torchwood premieres
in the UK this Sunday at 9PM on BBC Three and BBC HD .
Episodes air Sunday nights on BBC Three and BBC HD, Tuesdays and
Fridays on BBC Three, and Wednesdays on BBC Two for everyone who
doesn't get the digital stations. Overseas British military
personnel get Torchwood Monday nights on BFBS 1 and BFBS Navy, with
a Friday night repeat on BFBS 2. Regular schedule information will
be featured in "Torchwood This Week" , which has its first
edition today.
Torchwood chronicles the adventures of the mysterious Torchwood
organization that viewers met in the recent Series 2 of Doctor Who
(this time it'll be the Cardiff branch, not the London one). This
version is being led by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), who
appeared in Series 1 of Doctor Who. The series is being set up so
that you do not need to have seen Doctor Who for it to make sense.
Nor will you need to see Torchwood for future episodes of Doctor Who
to make sense.
Torchwood will air after the UK primetime watershed of 9PM. It has
been designed as an "adult" drama, as opposed to Doctor Who's status
as a "family" drama. It is allowed to have more gore, coarser
language, violence, and sexual content than viewers are used to
seeing in Doctor Who. We will not know exactly where Torchwood sets
its boundaries until episodes begin to air. If you have any children
who are Doctor Who fans and might be interested in seeing Torchwood,
it is very important that you watch the show first to determine if
the material is appropriate for them. If it does not seem to be
appropriate for them right now, they will get their own spinoff in
2007 with the Sarah Jane Adventures.
There will be little to no Torchwood schedule information in This
Week In Doctor Who, as Torchwood will be largely independent of
Doctor Who and would take a lot of space to cover here. Torchwood
This Week begins today and
will be the weekly home of schedule information and updates on that
KBS 2 South Korea has scheduled Series 2 of Doctor Who, 15 months after finishing Series 1. Series 2 airs 1 episode per week Saturdays at 12:50PM, beginning on 28 October, replacing a broadcast of Lost. First up - The Christmas Invasion.
For South Korean fans of series 1, the FOX cable channel is reported
repeating the series at 10:50PM. I do not have full schedule
information yet or a link, but if you have that channel, check it
out. Episodes are reportedly airing in English with subtitles.
Doctor Who has begun airing in Poland. TVP1 airs episodes Sundays at
3PM Eastern European Time. This weekend - Aliens Of London.
BBC Kids Canada has been devoting their
weekend Doctor Who broadcasts to stories that tie into episodes that
will air on the CBC this Fall. This
coming Sunday night at 2AM Eastern/11PM Pacific they will air the
1981 Special "K9 & Company: A Girl's Best Friend". It repeats
immediately afterwards at 3AM Eastern. It is the first time this
story has aired on BBC Kids. Featuring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah
Jane Smith and John Leeson as the voice of K9, it was a 50 minute
pilot for a spinoff series that was not produced, and sets the stage
for Sarah and K9 to be together in School Reunion, which CBC airs
Monday night at 8PM (8:30PM Newfoundland). Advanced notice - CBC
will pre-empt Doctor Who on 30 October, pushing "The Girl In The
Fireplace" to Monday 6 November.
UKTV Gold is launching their repeat run of Series 2 on Monday 23 October. The 13 regular episodes (The Christmas Invasion is omitted) air over 6 nights, starting at 7PM each night. Episodes repeat the next day at 3PM (6PM on 29 October). UKTV Gold airs the Paul McGann TV Movie this Sunday at 7:15AM and Monday 23 October at 3:20PM. UKTV Gold will start airing movie repeats of Classic Doctor Who again starting Wednesday 1 November at 7:05AM GMT. Genesis of the Daleks airs from 1 to 3 November, and then Jon Pertwee stories air in random order. Stories air Saturdays and Sundays in early morning, with a limited weekday run through Monday 13 November. All times 1 hour later on UKTV Gold + 1.
For press releases on Doctor Who, keep an eye on the BBC Press
Office and C21 Media .
