This Week In Doctor Who - January 26, 2005
(posted 26th Jan 2005, 12:46pm - TWIDW post #0275)
THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
January 26, 2005 - Vol 8, No 4
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
No additional stations for the new series announced this past week.
Since the previous column went to press:
Thursday January 20:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/272 - WILL 12 Urbana, IL confirms they are dropping Doctor Who on February 26 for financial reasons, positive news that WCET plans to continue airing Doctor Who, and the correction that Tom Baker is actually 71.
Right after that:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/273 - WCET
48 Cincinnati, OH breaks news that they've now learned that they're
losing Doctor Who rights on January 22, ending a 20 year run.
The next day:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/274 - Detailed report from WCET 48 on the loss of Doctor Who from their station, thanking fans for all the many years of support for the series and clarifying that WCET did not want to lose Doctor Who. It includes this statement they were given by BBC Worldwide Americas:
"Unfortunately, we won't be able to proceed with a renewal of Doctor
Who at this time. The new series of Doctor Who is currently being
shopped around to various commercial broadcasters. For this reason,
we have been asked not to make any syndication agreements on this
title until further notice. I'm sorry if this has caused you
inconvenience. Our sales department has been under strong pressure
to get this new, glossy series highly placed. Unfortunately, this
was a commercial strategy decision, and we do not have enough of an
existing PBS user base to bid against cable or the commercial
giants, some of which are taking the new series in consideration.
Thank you for understanding."
With WCET's contract ended, this leaves 5 over the air US stations still airing the series - 4 when WILL's contract ends at the end of February. As of this writing, none of those other 4 stations (WYBE, Maryland Public TV, Iowa Public TV, KUED) are known to be facing the end of their contracts just yet.
Some better news happened Saturday night. WYBE 35 Philadelphia, PA http://www.wybe.org aired the first 2 episodes of An Unearthly Child, the first Doctor Who story. Considering that no other Doctor Who affiliates have been allowed to purchase stories they didn't already have this was a surprising but welcome turn of events.
Early Tuesday Reuters had a story about BBC Worldwide Americas
making a deal with Akimbo On Demand Services http://www.akimbo.com
to offer some comedies, documentaries, dramas, and more to US
audiences through their internet service. Titles mentioned included
Porridge, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Blue Boy, Secrets Of World War II,
The Secret Garden, and more. Doctor Who was not mentioned in the
article. Here is a BBC press release on the deal:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/commercial/worldwidestories/pressrel
eases/2005/01_january/akimbo.shtml . C21 media has their own report
on the deal (link may work better) at
http://www.c21media.net/news/detail.asp?area=1&article=23253 .
