THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - November 12, 2003
by Benjamin F. Elliott
Vol 6, No 46
Doctor Who 40th anniversary month keeps on churning. While this
column covers Doctor Who broadcasts, you'll probably also want to
read the news pages at and for everything else going on in
the Who universe. Oh, and for the
Australian perspective. And for the New
Zealand perspective. And others I've probably forgotten but will no
doubt make it in next week.
BBCi premieres The Scream Of The Shalka tomorrow (13 November) at 12:30PM GMT, introducing the world to Richard E Grant as the Ninth Doctor. BBC7 has aired 3 stereo trailers for the story, which are now available on the BBCi website. Episodes will premiere on Thursdays through 18 December. BBCi also now has online the TV trailer for Power Of The Daleks recently discovered and shown at Panopticon.
BBC 7 will celebrate Doctor Who's
anniversary by airing all 3 Doctor Who radio stories which they hold
broadcast rights to. The Jon Pertwee stories "Paradise Of Death"
and "Ghosts Of N-Space" will air weeknights at 6PM and Midnight GMT
from Wednesday 19 November through Wednesday 1 December. The Colin
Baker story "Slipback" will air in 3 installments Saturdays at
6:40PM and 12:40AM GMT from Saturday 22 November through Saturday 13
December. BBC 7 is available on digital radio and through digital TV
setups in the UK, and is simulcast on the internet worldwide. Adjust
for local time.
BBC One will have two Doctor Who events on
Friday 21 November. Doctor Who is going to be featured on Blue Peter
(5PM) and a Doctor Who version of The Weakest Link will air during
the Children In Need telethon (7-10PM, 10:35PM-2AM). Anniversary
documentary "The Story Of Doctor Who" is expected to air around
I am currently trying to determine how many broadcasters around the
world air Blue Peter and what the lag time is from UK broadcast to
other broadcasts, to determine when the Doctor Who show will air in
other countries.
KBTC/KCKA/K65BU Tacoma/Centralia/Gray's River, WA has now announced that they will celebrate Doctor Who's 40th anniversary with a pledge marathon on {t{10605=December 6}]. 1 25 minute episode from each of the first seven Doctors, followed by the regular 2 episodes in their weekly cycle through the William Hartnell stories.
Dr. Demento aired the first half of a
Doctor Who tribute in the second hour of his US nationally
syndicated comedic musical show. Featured songs were "The Doctor"
sung by Jim Berl (sp?), "Who Is The Doctor?" sung by Jon
Pertwee, "Time Traveller" sung by Frazer Hines, "Doctorin' The
TARDIS", and "Gallifreyan Buccaneer" sung by Colin Baker. Dr.
Demento gave special recognition to two Who fans for helping dig up
material - Lea Hays, whose material will likely be on the second
broadcast, and someone whose name I regrettably didn't catch. If he
repeats the recognition I'll get your name in next week's column.
UK Gold pulled a late schedule change last weekend to fit in a retrospective on "Dirty Den" from Eastenders. The Saturday afternoon airing of the conclusion of Inferno aired approximately in the timeslot listed for The King's Demons, with The King's Demons airing afterwards. Beginning this week UK Gold +1 will air 24 hours a day, so all UK Gold shows will be on UK Gold +1. UK Gold 2 is redoing its lineup with less repetition of UK Gold content, so the late Saturday 3AM encores of Pertwee episodes are now gone. The schedule for the Doctor Who @ 40 weekend that appeared weeks ago now looks suspect, as the marathon begins and ends earlier in the day than the earlier notice. As of this writing, exact start and end times for marathon programming is unknown.
UKTV Australia goofed up in its broadcast of The Five Doctors last weekend. They aired the first three segments of a four part version of Five Doctors, leaving viewers hanging on the gripping cliffhanger of the Master walking down a flight of stairs. Part four did not air, as UKTV went straight into The Caves Of Androzani.
