This Week In Doctor Who - January 25, 2002 - Vol 5, No 4
by Benjamin F. Elliott
(TWIDW post #0067, duplicated in #0068)
Welcome to the weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts around the world. It's a quiet week, but there are a few things to bring up.
CANADA - BBC Kids' does not have a proper schedule stating which episodes they are airing on their website, and the online guides in Canada are getting less precise. They're in the middle of season 14 of Doctor Who, and they apparently only bought seasons 12 through 14 in their initial ordering of the show. If anyone has a reliable source of info on BBC Kids' scheduling plans, please get in touch with me.
UK - UK Gold has stopped airing Doctor Who late Sunday nights after 2 weeks, so the late Sunday airings could well have been simply time filler. The Saturday and Sunday morning broadcasts are almost at the end of the series. It is assumed that UK Gold will go back to the beginning of the 3rd Doctor's (Jon Pertwee's) stories once they finish the current run.
USA - KERA 13 Dallas, TX Doctor Who fans with Dish Network saw the channel move without notice last Friday. Dish Network had offered KERA 13, the primary PBS station in Dallas, on channel 8415, which Dish Network subscribers need a second satellite dish to receive. KDTA 2, the secondary PBS station in Dallas, had been airing on channel 8406, which could be received by a standard Dish Network dish. Sometime on January 18th Dish Network changed the channel assignments. KERA 13 moved to 8406, where all subscribers can find it, and KDTN 2 moved to 8415. Note - this just means that everyone in the Dallas market area with the local channels package can see KERA without getting a second dish. If you don't have the local channels package, you'll still need an antenna or cable to get the channel.
USA - There was an error last week regarding New Hampshire Public TV's pre-empting of the Saturday night Doctor Who broadcast. Doctor Who was pre-empted. But it wasn't pre-empted by a College Basketball game. It was actually pre-empted by a College Ice Hockey game.
Additions and corrections are welcome. And now, the listings:

UK Gold
Sat 7:20-9AM GMT Battlefield movie
For years they worked together, side by side, battling the most dangerous enemies Earth faced in the 20th Century. But the Doctor always took the dominant role, ignoring the contributions of his loyal partner. The relationship eventually collapsed, as the friendship came to a quiet end, without even a goodbye. The Doctor stopped returning to Earth, leaving his old assistant to battle evil alone. But in this story - the reunion. They team together one last time to battle warriors from another dimension, whose actions could set off a nuclear warhead in England. But will things ever be the same between the 7th Doctor ... and Bessie, his yellow roadster.
Sun 7:40-9AM GMT Ghost Light movie
The 7th Doctor and Ace visit a mansion straight out of Scooby-Doo. Monsters, ghosts, weird light, and a villain manipulating it all. Unfortunately, Ace begins to suspect that the Doctor is the villain.

Death haunts a mortuary. Dead bodies are going missing, Daleks are patroling the tunnels, an Assassin has shown up for a visit, the 6th Doctor's sandwich poisons a fish, and Peri kills a man. It's the beginning of a rather eventful day at Tranquil Repose. With more plot twists than some James Bond movies, this story was the last one to air before the 18 month hiatus in 1985, marking the end of 22 consecutive seasons on British TV.
Sun 7:30AM, Late Sun 1AM AEDT Resurrection of the Daleks both eps (45 minute episodes)
Note the special start time on Sunday morning. 7:30 - not 7:00. The 5th Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough arrive on Earth in 1985, which has an unusual link to deep space in the distant future, where a medical prison is fighting a losing battle to protect their prisoner - Davros - from the beings who could liberate or kill him - The Daleks.

Sat 11:30PM, Sun 5:30AM CST The Horns of Nimon ep 1 of 4
The best scene in this episode is mostly missing in the US episodic version due to the poor quality of the editing job on the surviving print. I was horrified when I saw what was cut. Yipes! It's still a good episode, but it will look so much better whenever the prints are replaced with newer versions or it comes out on VHS. The 4th Doctor and Romana come across a ship adrift in space. The ship's destination was Skonnos. The ship's cargo - was people, being brought to be sacrificed.
