Miners and natives accidentally awaken the great Squid Kroll, an enormous creature with a large appetite and a terrible temper. The 4th Doctor and Romana must once again save both sides from their mistakes.

The 4th Doctor, Romana, and K9 do battle with the Shadow, a servant of the Black Guardian. The Shadow found the last segment of the Key To Time first, and hopes to use it as leverage to keep the Doctor from ever completing the Key. In the battle of good versus evil, some will pay a terrible price.
